Types of Ultrasound by Trimester

1st Trimester

2D Ultrasounds

Most of our moms in their first trimester prefer 2D Ultrasound Sessions to see their baby move on the screen in black and white.

This is because good 3D Ultrasounds start between

24-28 weeks.

2nd Trimester

1st Trimester

2D / 3D Ultrasounds

These are gray/orange images that show a 3-dimensional fetal face.

Moms start choosing to have 3D sessions in the 2nd trimester, usually around 22-26 weeks, but 3D can be performed at any gestational age!

3rd Trimester

3D / 4D/ 5D / HD Ultrasounds

Between 28-34/35 weeks is the ideal time for a 3D/4D ultrasound session. (Best is 29-32 weeks!)

The further along you are the more detailed the baby's facial features will be. Sometimes it is harder to get your baby to cooperate the further along you are.

Preparing for Your Scan

🗓️ Best Time for 3D/4D/5D/HD Live Ultrasounds:

Ideal window: 24 to 34 weeks
(Available up until delivery—image quality will vary from 32 weeks on)

24 weeks - See baby's face and chest in one image, see the hands and feet, the facial features are just starting to develop at this point
26 weeks - See baby's face and chest in one image, the facial features are continuing to develop
28 weeks - Baby's face starts to develop facial features that resemble one or both parents.
30 weeks - Baby will have developed most of their facial features by this time
32 weeks - SWEET SPOT, Your baby's facial features are developed and this is a wonderful time for an ultrasound
34+ weeks - Amazing details as the facial features are more formed from now until delivery (Please note: sometimes it is hard to get a FULL fetal face at this time, for that reason we recommend booking a 25 minute, but ideally a 40+ minute scan for best chances to see your baby's face.)
36+ - Baby's facial features will be more prominent but low fluid or breech (butt down) positioning greatly affect the image quality at this gestational age.

What Baby Will Look Like

🧠 Pro Tip:

The closer to delivery, the more developed your baby is and the more developed their facial features are. This has both its advantages and disadvantages.

At 26 weeks we are normally able to see your baby's face and chest in one image, but they will have a more bony facial structure because most of the weight gain is in the 3rd trimester.

By 34/36 weeks your baby's face will look full and we will be able to see more facial features since your baby is closer to delivery, but low amniotic fluid and breech positioning greatly affect image quality at this gestational age, so Plan your ultrasound accordingly.
